"body_text": "The UK’s energy price difficulties are likely to continue into 2022 as conditions in the international gas market remain challenging, an energy analyst has said.\n\nSpeaking at New York’s JFK airport, Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested that the UK’s soaring energy prices were a “short-term problem” caused by the world economy “waking up after Covid”.\n\nBut Kateryna Filippenko, principal analyst at Edinburgh-based energy research company Wood Mackenzie, disagreed suggesting the winter would continue to be “tight”.\n\nShe told the PA news agency: “Covid has played a role but it’s more complicated than that. I would definitely not say this was the main reason.”\n\nPart of the problem is the UK’s own gas production, which has slumped 28% compared to last year due to to a series of planned and unplanned maintenance projects and delays.\n\nWhile gas prices have soared globally, this production downturn has placed the UK in a particularly vulnerable position, as has unusually low output from wind generation. As a result, the UK is having to import more energy from an already strained global market.\n\nMs Filippenko said: “At the same time, we have Asian gas demand growing strongly, partly due to the recovery from Covid but also the main Asian growth drivers like economic growth.\n\n“Asia is ready to offer higher prices for LNG (liquified natural gas). In the Atlantic basin, we have countries like Brazil with higher demand for LNG as well.\n\n“That all means less available for Europe.”\n\nAnother difficulty is that the UK’s usual alternative to gas generation is not as readily available. It will bring some balance to this system, but this balance will be a very fine one and any cold spell could put strain on the system.”\n\nFurther help could come from the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, although this still needs approval from the German regulator and there is uncertainty about if and when this will be granted.\n\nMs Filippenko added that the supplies from Nord Stream 2 would also not necessarily be in addition to gas already imported from Russia but could simply replace existing supplies into Europe, limiting the impact on prices.\n\nHer conclusion was that while pressure on prices would ease, this would not be until next year making for a difficult winter for both Europe in general and the UK in particular.",

Coal-generating capacity has also shrunk dramatically in recent years to four gigawatts, compared to more than 30 gigawatts of gas-generating capacity.

Cold winter could spell problems

Gas output has begun to increase since the summer as maintenance work is completed, but overall output will stay low and the UK will remain vulnerable to cold snaps.

Ms Filippenko said: “We do expect UK production to recover a bit. It will bring some balance to this system, but this balance will be a very fine one and any cold spell could put strain on the system.”

Further help could come from the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, although this still needs approval from the German regulator and there is uncertainty about if and when this will be granted.

Ms Filippenko added that the supplies from Nord Stream 2 would also not necessarily be in addition to gas already imported from Russia but could simply replace existing supplies into Europe, limiting the impact on prices.

Her conclusion was that while pressure on prices would ease, this would not be until next year making for a difficult winter for both Europe in general and the UK in particular.

The UK’s energy price difficulties are likely to continue into 2022 as conditions in the international gas market remain challenging, an energy analyst has said.

Speaking at New York’s JFK airport, Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested that the UK’s soaring energy prices were a “short-term problem” caused by the world economy “waking up after Covid”.

But Kateryna Filippenko, principal analyst at Edinburgh-based energy research company Wood Mackenzie, disagreed suggesting the winter would continue to be “tight”.

She told the PA news agency: “Covid has played a role but it’s more complicated than that. I would definitely not say this was the main reason.”

Part of the problem is the UK’s own gas production, which has slumped 28% compared to last year due to to a series of planned and unplanned maintenance projects and delays.

While gas prices have soared globally, this production downturn has placed the UK in a particularly vulnerable position, as has unusually low output from wind generation. As a result, the UK is having to import more energy from an already strained global market.

Ms Filippenko said: “At the same time, we have Asian gas demand growing strongly, partly due to the recovery from Covid but also the main Asian growth drivers like economic growth.

“Asia is ready to offer higher prices for LNG (liquified natural gas). In the Atlantic basin, we have countries like Brazil with higher demand for LNG as well.

“That all means less available for Europe.”

Another difficulty is that the UK’s usual alternative to gas generation is not as readily available. Ms Filippenko explained that, in normal times, the UK would switch to generating electricity from coal when gas prices rose.

But, she said, the coal market was also “tight” due to “a range of supply disruptions”.
